Island Quest Day Camp:
Skate Park & Skateboarding Program
A proposal designed for beginner-to-Intermediate Plug-In programs
DESIGN + STRATEGY
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
Program Objective & Scope
The objective of this project is to design, build, equip, and support a dedicated skateboarding (and scooter-ready) program at Island Quest Day Camp, centered around a custom skate park installed on half of a basketball court.
The program is designed to:
  • Welcome complete beginners with zero intimidation
  • Provide clear progression for returning and intermediate campers
  • Be safe, visible, and easy to supervise
  • Be realistic to operate within a summer camp structure
  • Deliver long-term value, not a one-season installation
This is a plug-in solution that combines:
  • Skate park design
  • Equipment packages
  • Staff Onboarding guidance
  • Program curriculum review (Optional)
  • Ongoing support
Island Quest retains control of staffing and payroll; we provide structure, tools, and expertise.
Project Structure
The project is structured around four core pillars:
a) Build the Skate Park
b) Provide Products & Equipment
c) Support Staffing & Training
d) Run & Evolve the Program
Each pillar is detailed below.
Skate Park Design
Design Constraints
  • Limited space (½ basketball court)
  • Audience: beginner → intermediate
  • Not designed for advanced riders
  • Must be easy to assemble, dismantle, store, and reset
Design Principles
  • Progression before performance
  • Flow over isolated obstacles
  • Low intimidation, high engagement
  • Multiple zones instead of one dominant feature
  • Clear visual boundaries for safety
  • Modular elements that can be reconfigured
Pre-designed parks (e.g. Freshpark) are intentionally not the primary solution, as they skew toward intermediate–advanced riders and drop-in use.
Preferred Park Configuration
Custom Beginner Flow Park (Recommended)
Wood Custom Flow Park + Evolution Ramp
This configuration balances:
Beginner accessibility
Progression potential
Durability
Long-term adaptability

Note: Assembly / install requires basic tools only.
Core Progression Feature
At least one Evolution Ramps 4-ft combo mini-ramp (Option to upgrade to 8-ft wide if space allows)
  • Used as a progression tool, not an advanced obstacle
  • Introduced gradually across sessions and the summer
  • Optional for beginners
  • Central to long-term camper retention

Note: inflatable ramp installs in ~20 minutes, repairable on-site, easy to move when deflated.
Skate Park Layout (Functional Zones)
The park is divided into four functional quarters, each accommodating different levels and improving flow.
Quarter 1 – Foundations (Level 1)
Two wedges / kickers facing each other
Central bump or speed roller
Focus: rolling, balance, pushing, stopping, pumping
Quarter 2 – Direction & Comfort (Level 2)
Two small quarter pipes facing each other
Micro spine or mellow transition
Focus: turning, fakies, confidence with transitions
Quarter 3 – Transition Progression (Level 2–3)
Evolution Ramps 4-ft combo mini-ramp
Learn drop-ins, pumping, early coping interaction
Quarter 4 – Intro Street Skills (Level 3)
  • Low rail and ledge (movable)
  • Can be cleared for flat-ground work for beginners

Note: Rails and ledges are movable so Quarter 4 can revert to beginner space when needed.
Modularity & Storage
  • Obstacles can be moved to refresh layouts
  • Wheels recommended on most features
  • Estimated storage: all elements can stack on top of the quarter pipes
  • Wood ramps can be resurfaced after several seasons
  • Winter storage strongly recommended
  • Tarps advised for summer rain protection
Ramp & Supplier Considerations
Preferred / Recommended
Evolution Ramps – progression anchor
Ramp Type 1
  • Skatelite finish option (longer lifespan, better look)
Ramp Type 2
  • Durable, good beginner elements, more maintenance (paint)
Equipment & Product Packages
Core Packages

  • Skateboards (multiple sizes)
  • Helmets
  • Knee / elbow / wrist pads
Scooter Package
  • Uses same helmet & pad inventory
